I've Been Raped by AT&T

I just got my local phone bill, and it includes an EIGHTY DOLLAR charge from AT&T. At first I was like "I don't use ATT," but then I remembered receiving a few collect calls from New York via 1-800-CALL-ATT last month. Those calls lasted a total of fity-three minutes.

I figured that this was the result of some weird NYC surcharge, so I went looking on the AT&T website for rates. Big surprise: They're not listed there. So I called them, and after being passed along to three different customer service people, I finally reached the correct off-shore calling center:

Mike: Hi! I was just trying to find out rates for 1-800-CALL-ATT.
Lady: Just a moment. Okay, the rates for 1-800-CALL-ATT are 99 cents plus a 3.95 per call fee and a 7% something something charge.
Mike: Is that 99 cents...a minute???
Lady: Yes, sir.
Mike: Holy Fucking Carrot Top!!!!!
Lady: Sir?
Mike: (click)

Am I the last person on earth to find about this? Is Carrot Top so charismatic that his commercials are able to combat the waves of angry consumers that should be cursing AT&T with every breath? Is there a class action suit that I missed out on? I swear I've made credit card calls from whorehouses in Thailand for cheaper than this.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go pawn my cat so I can pay my phone bill.
