On Your PostMarks....

It's the first of December, which for me means giving my landlady her monthly foot rub. But for thousands of 1L's it means sending out those varied and inspirational cover letters and resumés to law firms all over the country in hopes of nabbing the killer 1L summer gig that will enable them to phone in the rest of law school from a whorehouse in Brazil.

What? You're a 1L and you haven't sent yours out yet? No big deal. I mean, it's not like you've wasted your time at law school just because everyone else is going to get an amazing firm job this summer and you're going to be sitting at home watching Real World reruns and looking thru the want ads to see if there are any new Shortstop franchises opening in your area since that's the only employment you'll ever get once OCI employers see that gigantic blank spot on your resumé and realize that your law school made a gigantic mistake by admitting you in the first place, you pathetic piece of unemployable crap.

But seriously. There aren't that many firm jobs to go around, and even if you get one, the money is going to come straight out of your financial aid for the next year, which means that instead of blowing it on scotch and Junior Mints you'll have to actually save some of it. Also, this summer may be your last chance for doing nothing at all until after you retire (which, judging by the size of your loans, will be in the year EleventyBillion.)

Which brings me to a favorite topic of mine. The Question: What did Mike do his 1L summer? The Answer: Absolutely Jack. I survived a wedding, read a bunch of novels, and spent some quality time with a good friend I like to call Bob the Xbox. That's it. And not once did an interviewer ask me why I hadn't done anything "law-related" over the summer. Granted, a lot of that had to do with the kilt. But still. Interviewers are going to be a lot more interested in the shitty grade you're getting in Contracts this semester than in the way you spend your summer. So really: Don't stress.

But if you do decide that you want to do something other than nothing this summer, remember that there are options other than the firms. I don't know anyone who did a judicial internship that doesn't think it was great. Professors need research assistants. Non-profits need research assistants. Certain blawgers need research assistants/private dancers. All I'm saying is that there's a lot of exciting stuff out there, and that I offer a competitive wage and benefits.

So quit reading this tripe and start licking envelopes.

i had a great time last summer working the night shift at the Taco Cabana drive-thru on MLK in Austin.

i did not look @ it as a setback, and neither did Sonic when they interviewed me during OCI (during the same week, but not on campus, nor was it affiliated with OCI proper).

Or you could do what I did and drink beer on the beach in Greece all summer and get 7 hours of law school credit for it. Law school study abroads are awesome, and I met the coolest girl I have met in law school so far, and you kids at UT are lucky enough to go to school with her.
