Our Mission: Pull off a Summer Clerk Prank.
My Discovery: That a mid-level associate had self-published a book about five years ago with a vanity press, a book that he wrote right out of college about travelling the world, a book that was totally orderable, a book that nobody else seemed to be aware of, and, most importantly, a book that featured a cover photo of him astride a Bactrian Camel.
The Plan: To order several dozen copies of the book, blow up the cover photo into posters that would be used to paper the victim's office walls, and send copies of the book to half of the firm to let them know about the Re-Release Party going on in the victim's office.
The Problem: People can't keep their mouths shut. We knew it would take a few days to get the copies in, but this didn't even make it through the afternoon without being leaked to the victim. While we were trying to keep one associate quiet, an associate from the other side of the building came by to say that they knew about it. Hopeless.
One (Slightly) Bigger Problem: I'm now stuck with an uncancelable order for sixty-four copies of the book. Awesome.
(Did I ever tell you guys about the time, at the end of my senior year, when we managed to get the locker combinations for the entire school, and we opened up all of the juniors' lockers and shifted their contents into the locker to the right? That was pretty great. And nobody could pin it on us until a week after it happened, even though none of us were planning, at the time, to have to uphold things like attorney-client privilege or fiduciary duties. I miss those days.)
You could always pretend you're a summer associate at Cleary Gottlieb. The Plan: Get as drunk as possible at a multi-firm charity event on the Chelsea Piers. Your discovery: Drinking makes you want to strip and go swimming in the Hudson River during the event. The Problem: The firm has to call the Coast Guard to save your sorry ass and the firm cancels your trip to the Rome office. That's a much better prank, but it's been done recently.
